Wealth Wednesdays: Start a Confidential Career Conversation Before You Decide to Leave

You do not have to be ready to leave your firm to wonder what else might be possible. You may be doing well and still have questions about compensation, support or where your career is heading.

Wealth Wednesdays | October 2026 edition | For advisors and financial planners

You do not have to be ready to leave your firm to wonder what else might be possible. You may be doing well and still have questions about compensation, support or where your career is heading. A confidential conversation can help you understand the options before you decide whether there is any reason to make a move.

It can begin with questions about your next stage.

Share enough to establish relevance

An initial conversation can cover your responsibilities, the clients you serve in general terms, your working preferences and what you would like to change. You do not need to supply client names, account information or documents you are not authorized to share.

Use a personal contact method if you prefer. Be clear about how and when you want to be contacted, especially if privacy is an important part of exploring your options.

Understand what happens next

Ask how your information will be used and when an introduction to a firm would be discussed. At Ramax, nothing is shared with another firm without your permission, and we do not contact your current firm.

Useful questions for an early conversation include:

  • Which parts of my experience are relevant to the opportunities we are discussing?
  • What information would be needed before an introduction?
  • When would I learn the identity of a prospective firm?
  • What working arrangements or markets should we consider?
  • Which questions need legal or other professional advice?

Keep control of the decision

A conversation may lead to a relevant opportunity, a clearer view of your priorities or a decision that now is not the time to move. None of those outcomes requires pretending that every person who makes an inquiry is ready to accept a job.

Ramax is a nationwide starting point for wealth advisors, wealth managers and CFP professionals exploring their next role, firm or platform. You can begin while you are still deciding what a worthwhile move would look like.

Considering your next role, firm or platform? Ramax welcomes confidential conversations with wealth advisors, wealth managers and CFP professionals nationwide. An inquiry does not imply that a matching position is currently available. Explore your options confidentially.

Start with a conversation about your goals

An initial career discussion does not require you to have made a decision about leaving. You may simply want to understand how your experience translates to another platform, whether a different role could offer more planning responsibility or what questions deserve attention before considering a move.

Begin with your objectives and preferences. Describe the work you enjoy, the support you value and the changes that would make another opportunity worth exploring. You can provide useful context without sending confidential client information or treating every conversation as an application. Before an introduction is made, understand the opportunity and agree on the next step.

I want Ramax to be a first conversation for advisors considering their next step, wherever they are in the country. You should be able to explore what a different platform might offer before you have decided to leave. The starting point is what you want to understand, rather than whether you are ready to apply for a particular job.
