THE RIGHT CONTEXT

Compensation is more than a number.

A title alone rarely describes a financial services role. Compensation may depend on investment strategy, revenue responsibility, assets overseen, location, seniority, firm economics, carried interest, deferred awards and the balance of fixed and variable pay. A broad occupational benchmark is a starting point, not a firm-specific offer or a reliable proxy for total compensation at an alternative investment manager.

Questions employers should ask

  • Which comparable institutions compete for this capability?
  • What part of compensation is fixed, discretionary or deferred?
  • Which skills are transferable across adjacent sectors?
  • What would make an experienced professional consider a move?

Questions professionals should ask

  • How does the mandate change across platforms and strategies?
  • What is the real mix of base, bonus and longer-term economics?
  • How much autonomy, ownership and advancement does the role offer?
  • How does the opportunity compare with staying in place?

HOW TO INTERPRET THE DATA

Why market pay differs from published averages

Firm and strategy

An investment role at a hedge fund, a private credit platform and a traditional asset manager can carry different risk, scope and pay structures despite similar titles.

Level and accountability

Team leadership, revenue generation, portfolio responsibility, regulatory accountability and specialist expertise change the comparison set.

Total economics

Base salary is only one component. Bonuses, commissions, deferred awards, ownership and long-term incentives require separate analysis.

RESEARCH IN CONTEXT

Hiring intelligence beyond compensation

Our quarterly Financial Services Talent Market Intelligence reviews hiring activity, wealth advisor movement, private markets, workforce structure and AI governance. The Q3 2026 report examines why selective hiring can coexist with demand for specialized talent.

Our methodology

This hub separates public occupational statistics from qualitative discussion of financial services search markets. Public figures are attributed to their originating institutions and labeled by reporting period and measure. Broader observations describe factors that can influence searches; they are not presented as proprietary salary survey results. This resource is not individual compensation advice.
